WE GUARANTEE THE SUSTAINABLE ORIGIN OF WOOD

The sustainable management of resources is fundamental in neutralising the impact of climate change, especially in natural environments and forests, whose health is of concern due to the advance of deforestation.

It is unusual for a distributor such as Onesta to move into the first transformation business. Onesta’s strategy involves participating in the entire value chain of the forestry sector, from the tree to the processed product. It is the only way to ensure the use of wood from sustainably managed forests to guarantee the quality and origin of the wood to our customers.

WE SEEK TO MAXIMISE THE VALUE OF FORESTS THROUGH LONG-TERM FOREST MANAGEMENT THAT CONTRIBUTES TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIAL WELL-BEING OF RURAL AREAS.

WE WORK WITH DIFFERENT SPECIES OF WOOD CONIFEROUS PINE CYPRESS

For industrial packaging and construction:

  • Douglas fir.
  • White fir.
  • Larch.
  • Lawson’s cypress.
  • Scots Pine.
  • Black Pine.

For joinery:

Dry radiata pine wood.

WE CULTIVATE A CIRCULAR PRODUCTION MODEL

AT OUR SAWMILL, WE MAKE DIVERSE USE OF ALL THE BY-PRODUCTS WE GENERATE:

SAWDUST

We sell sawdust for the production of:

  • Chipboard.
  • Pellets (vegetable fuel for fireplaces).

WOOD CHIPS

We commercialize wood chips for the production of:

  • Cellulose.
  • Fibreboard.
  • Pellets (vegetable fuel for fireplaces).

BARK

We use bark internally for producing thermal energy (in a biomass boiler), necessary for drying the wood.

ONESTA Chair of Bioproducts for Construction

We sponsor and promote the ONESTA Chair of Bioproducts for Construction at the University of Cordoba, the first Chair in Spain specialising in this field, encompassing the forestry-industry-construction value chain, from research into the genetic improvement of species, to the optimisation of forest use, and the development and innovation of products for their integration into construction solutions.

With the firm objective of promoting the use of wood or any other organic product and having a direct impact on the decarbonisation of the construction sector, the Chair was created with the aim of being a focus of attraction to foster the generation of synergies and promote a spirit of collaboration with all national and international research centres and universities with a study objective related to this field.

The Chair’s activity is focused on research, knowledge transfer, training and dissemination in subjects related to:

  • Agroforestry resources and their integrated management.
  • Quantification of their ecosystem services, especially carbon storage and wood supply.
  • The bioproducts industry aimed at low carbon footprint construction.

The Chair will be directed by Marta Conde García, professor of the Agroforestry Engineering Department of the Higher Technical School of Agricultural and Forestry Engineering.

The Joint Commission, responsible for supervising the activities of the Chair, is formed by:

  • Mr Manuel Torralbo Rodríguez Honourable Rector of the University of Cordoba or, in his absence, Ms Lourdes Arce Jiménez, Vice-Rector for Innovation and Transfer of the University of Cordoba
  • Ms Rosa María Gallardo Cobos, Director of the Higher Technical School of Agricultural and Forestry Engineering.
  • Carlos Navarro García-Gutiérrez, Operations Director at ONESTA.
  • Ms Marta Sánchez Fernández, Director of the Projects Department at ONESTA

THE SUSTAINABLE FOREST, CO2 SINK

GROWING TREES CONSUME MUCH MORE CO2, BUT EVEN WHEN THE RAW MATERIAL IS PROCESSED, CARBON DIOXIDE IS STILL STORED THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE LIFE OF THE PRODUCT.

The more we use the raw material from the forest, the greater the benefits for the climate. The forest is helping to replace fossil materials in an increasing number of applications, thus reducing carbon dioxide and its effect on climate change.

To guarantee traceability, we are externally audited with the PEFC: Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC/14-38-00107), which promotes objectives related to the conservation of the environment, the improvement of productivity and the promotion of socioeconomic development in rural environments.

How does a sustainable forest work?

Sustainable forests are those whose management allows the provision of resources while preserving the rest of their uses and services. Sustainability ensures its regeneration and is key to maintaining economic activity linked to its exploration. Thanks to this form of management, the multitude of benefits that forests bring to the planet will be assured in the future. These are the main benefits of sustainable forests.

How does a sustainable forest work?
  • They favor the conservation of biodiversity, serving as home to numerous species.
  • They provide a multitude of essential resources for the daily activity of human beings.
  • They help combat climate change by acting as carbon sinks and regulating the climate.
  • They facilitate the formation of soils and prevent their erosion, generated by phenomena such as desertification.

ONESTA, FOREST AND ECOLOGICAL DNA

Owning our own forest mass is part of our DNA, because only in this way can we strengthen our commitment to the environment:

We use local wood, with an environmental certificate that guarantees the traceability and sustainability of forests in depopulated areas.

We guarantee quality jobs in rural and depopulated areas, dignifying forestry work.

We research new species that are resistant and help combat climate change.

THE HUMAN FACTOR, KEY TO LABOUR AND FOREST HEALTH

On a day-to-day basis we care about the environment, but also the occupational health and safety of our employees and of those who provide services through contractor companies. And, of course, we care about offering high quality products.

Where our workers are concerned, we foster the necessary conditions to attract and develop excellent people who contribute to the fulfilment of our business objectives. We do this by promoting work environments based on respect, mutual collaboration and permanent communication. We encourage equal opportunities within work teams, and we reject all types of discrimination, whether it be racial, political, gender, sexual orientation or religious belief.

OUR FUTURE IS GREEN, JUST LIKE THE FOREST’S

For us, the sustainable challenge means taking full responsibility from the seed to the customer. We have a holistic vision of our forest advisory services, industrial processes and relationships with customers and suppliers.

We will manage our forest exploitation based on our own forest masses and from the management of CO2 emission rights.

We aim to maximise the value of forests, through excellent forestry production that satisfies companies’ industrial supply and procures sales to third parties with the highest quality standards, working with a long-term view that contributes to the environment and to social welfare.
